Interviewing two professionals in EArly Childhood Care and Education

The insights that I gained from the interviews regarding current advocacy efforts and need in our area of interest within the field of early childhood.
Early Literacy is a current interest in early childhood. I interviewed a 1st grade teacher and a prek teacher. The 1st grade teacher thought that reading is a big issue. The issue is how early should they start reading? What should you use to teach them?
The pre-k teacher said that it helps emergent readers become fimailar with different types of text and print. That's when they begin to notice words and sounds and the shape of the letters. They also pick up on the way print is read from left to right and top to bottom. I feel that both of these things are big issues when it comes to early literacy, because both teachers have concerns about early literacy. I feel that they should start to read by 1st grade, but I know that there are kindergarteners reading by the 2nd month of school. I don't know if every school has their own timeline for this or not?

These interviews have influeced my decision about this interest area becasue it is a very important one.
My interest areas were early literacy, getting help for children with suspected learning disabilities, and how does having a preschool education benefit the child in a K-8 school and life.

What area do you think I should pursue for my paper? I think that they are all good areas.

  1. Hello Mary,

I want to start off saying you choose some good ideas for your topic. Mary did you ask teachers what assessments they used to see where children are on the level ranging low to high. The children are tested at beginning year to know what skills to apply in the classroom for all students. What activites are given to children to focus on early literacy? Mary are teachers putting students in small groups, and hands-on activities to work on that encourages, and developed their early literacy skills. Where students were on the literacy specturm. Mary going to speak with a Special Education Teacher to find out how literacy effects these students. How limited is the students' communication, and lack language skills can be stressful for them. Mary do you just want to focus on the Preschool group? Infancy is where education begins with teachers teaching, and continues on throughout their adult life. I hope this will help you Mary. Good Luck!

  2. Mary, I think the early literacy is a wonderful topic and it is a very important one. You have so many different things that you could research under that topic. I was discussing with a friend about the influence of modern technology on reading. Equipment such as a Kindle Fire is taking the place of papper books. Do you think this will effect or future young readers? My friend bought all three of her kids a Kindle Fire because she told me she doesnt have time to read to her kids and that you could purchase books for the Kindle that would read the story to the children. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I personally dont like it, as reading time before bed is my time to reconnect with my daughter. I read to her and she reads to me. We discuss things. Alot of kids are more visual learners so maybe the kindle is more attractive to them because it is like watching a tv screen or playing a video game. I have also heard on the radio that the brightness of the screens ( Nook and Kindle) can have a negative effect on a child or adults eyesight.

  3. Mary I also have a great interest in early literacy and the foundation it sets for their future years. I currently have ten students in my Pre-K class who are reading and two who started on books today. I see how exposure to early literacy within a good curriculum and parental support helps to develop children's literacy in so many ways. My area of interest is those children mainly males who are behind or later fall behind in literacy because they do not receive the same help, encouragement or support girls do especially with reading at home which is so important. Any thoughts on this?

  4. This is a great topic and I agree there is such a need for support with literacy in early childhood so advocacy that supports early literacy is a great idea! There are so many options in this areas as well, beyind just basic support with adding books, but special readers, electronic information or even support for the teachers in the form of additional professional development.I believe the possibilities are endless.
